Fragile x syndrome: the level of knowledge of health personnel in female infertility and cause of school dropout (case of Bamako)

Abstract

Goal: To know the level of knowledge of Malian doctors on female infertility linked to fragile X syndrome. Patients and Methods: This was a prospective analytical study focusing on fragile Bamako Reference Health Centers and other structures). The study population consisted of health personnel in these different structures. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS 12.0 software. The statistical test used was that of Chi2 and Fisher's exact test, the statistical significance threshold was set at 5%. Results: During the study period we interviewed 50 doctors including 36% (18/50) general practitioners, 20% (20/50) gynecologists; More than half of the staff interviewed, i.e. 58% (29/50), did not consult patients suffering from fragile X syndrome. There was a relationship between specialists and the number of patients consulted Khi2: 31.34; P: 0.00 and between services and the number of patients consulted: chi2: 40.78; P: 0.02. Symptoms such as intellectual deficit were known by 72% (36/50) of staff; premature ovarian failure was not known by health personnel in 42% (21/50); primary amenorrhea 28% (14/50); Seventy-six (76%) of healthcare workers do not know
that fragile X syndrome is a hereditary disease. Support was not provided to 100% of healthcare personnel. Conclusion: the level of knowledge about infertility linked to fragile X syndrome is not known by most health personnel in different health structures in Mali.
